Recent changes to US federal law and policy have given states’ more leeway to regulate in widely different ways. Through a discussion of through a discussion of a range of various state laws, we will identify the impacts this current regulatory situation has on clinical documentation and on our exposure to legality when delivering clinical services. This 1 hour workshop is intended to meet ethics continuing education requirements.

Learning Objectives

After this workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the regulatory impact of providing clinical service across state lines.
  2. Identify some other states’ laws that may impact us as Washington based clinicians.
  3. Create strategies to appropriately document clinical services while protecting clients and ourselves.

Eric Strom is an attorney and Licensed Mental Health Counselor. As an attorney, Eric provides legal counsel, consultation and guidance to mental health professionals. The focus of Eric’s clinical practice is providing mental health counseling services to combat veterans. Eric is currently serving as the ethics advisor for the Washington Mental Health Counselors Association.
