Sound record keeping is a key element of effective clinical work. This 3 hour Ethics workshop will present an overview of Washington State and Federal legal standards regarding creating, maintaining, and releasing clinical records. We will also specifically discuss the requirements of the federal Good Faith Estimate of Costs.

Participants will gain increased understanding of the current legal and ethical standards regarding medical records. This course is intended to meet ethics continuing education requirements.

Outline: Sources of Law and Ethics Standards (0.25 hours) Record keeping (0.5 hours) Diagnosing (0.25 hours) Session, Progress, & Process Notes (0.5 hours) Medical Records (0.75hour) Good Faith Estimate of Costs (0.75 hours)

Objectives:

Participants in this workshop will be able to: 1) Locate and describe ethical standards relating to clinical documentation 2) Locate and describe Federal and Washington State legal standards relating to clinical documentation 3) Identify the requirements of the Good Faith Estimate of Costs. 4) Evaluate sufficiency and effectiveness of current documentation strategies. 5) Apply best practice standards to clinical documentation of work with a range of diverse client populations.

Presenter: Eric Strom

Eric Strom is an attorney and Licensed Mental Health Counselor. As an attorney, Eric provides legal counsel, consultation and guidance to mental health professionals. The focus of Eric’s clinical practice is providing mental health counseling services to combat veterans. Eric is currently serving as the ethics advisor for the Washington Mental Health Counselors Association.
